:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Euan A Baird -- Comic masterwork for spring schedules everywhere : It's tempting to begin with: I concur thus. Here comes the first novel from the only rock journalist whose writing is often more entertaining to read than the music he's discussing. (Alongside, Nik Cohn's Awopbopaloobop, of course.) Actually, for brief moments in The Unstable Boys, I thought I was reading deleted extracts from Cohn's seminal history of pop which is no bad thing. It has the same assuredness, energy and passion zipping off each page. Quite what to expect was uncertain but, rest assured, the book hasn’t come short, and weaving elements of reality into the fiction was probably the wisest and best move. Set in an alternative world of rock ‘n’ roll populated with a cacophony of highly dubious characters who have been turned up to eleven, it has an authenticity simply because the author truly knows his subject. Arm wrestling with Wilson Pickett, indeed! Don’t know if I’d want him turning up at my door but can’t wait for the next one, there’s got to be more in the tank. A hilarious book, no error.
